Tennis Drops 17-4A Match to China Spring 16-3

Gatesville High suffered a 16-3 setback to China Spring Tuesday in the final league match of the fall season.  Dalton Polk (def. Bright 6-2, 6-2) and Brandon Carothers (def. Bland 8-7) won in Boy's Singles, while the Girls' Doubles team of Ali Fernandez and Maci Bannister (def. Bradburn-Cox 6-3, 6-0) also notched a match win.  Other GHS results:  Girl's Singles - Fernandez lost to Cox 9-7, Bannister lost to Hopkins 8-1, Michaela Grundy lost to Durham 6-2, 6-0, Kristen Helm lost to Dark 6-0, 6-0, Emily Smallridge lost to Oakley 6-0, 6-0, Rachel DuBose lost to Bradburn 6-1, 6-1; Girl's Doubles - Smallridge and Grundy lost to Kimbell-Durham 6-2, 6-3, Helm and DuBose lost to Dark-Oakley 6-0, 6-2; Boy's Singles - Sean Dolan lost to Weiss 6-2, 6-4, Preston Fowler lost to Hunter 6-2, 6-4, Coby Fread lost to Morgan 6-2, 7-5, Shy Tatum lost to Young 8-0, Chris Sandell lost to Stephens 6-0, 6-3; Boy's Doubles - Polk and Newton lost to Bright-Hunter 6-1, 6-2, Fread and Fowler lost to Weiss-Bevins 6-2, 6-2, Carothers and Tatum lost to Varga-Bland 6-3, 6-3; Mixed Doubles - Allison Hopson and Dolan lost to Hopkins-Mitchell 6-4, 7-5.  Gatesville now sets its sights on postseason play, as GHS takes on 18-4A champion Madisonville next Tuesday in the Class 4A bi-district team round.  Match details are still being finalzied.
