Athens won back-to-back games to sweep Gatesville 2-0 in a Class 4A bi-district playoff series last weekend. The AHS Hornets won the series opener 7-1 at Athens, then came back to shutout GHS 5-0 here Saturday to clinch and advance to this week's area round. Gatesville, which advanced to the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from District 17-4A, ends its season with a record of 8-19. Here is a capsule look at each game: Athens 7, Gatesville 1: AHS broke open a scoreless game by scoring seven runs in their final four at-bats, including three in a decisive sixth inning. GHS managed just two hits, a single from Jared Butler and double from Ryan Stovall. Gatesville's lone score came in the top-half of the fourth, as Stovall lined a two-out double down the left field line. Tyler Lewis, running for Stovall, would later score when Colten Washburn's pop fly was misplayed in the infield. Athens 5, Gatesville 0: AHS made the most of four hits and took advantage of six Hornet (GHS) errors. Athens scored single runs in the first and third innings to go up 2-0 after four innings. AHS scored twice in the fifth and added an insurance marker in the sixth. Billy Latham had a double for GHS, while Peyton Bates, Zach Mueller, Stovall and Chase Mundkowsky collected singles. Colton Robello worked on the hill, allowing four hits and four walks while fanning eight batters. Gatesville left eight runners stranded on base.
