As the regular season dwindles down, Gatesville finds itself oh-so-close from a postseason bid. The Hornets have just two games remaining but both outings are against heavyweights - Friday at home versus No. 16 China Spring (JV 4:30, Varsity 7:00 PM), next Tuesday at league-leading and 3rd-ranked Robinson. A win against either state-ranked team clinches a playoff berth for GHS, and the Hornets can also gain playoff entry with a Connally loss in the Cadets' finale Tuesday against Hillsboro. Currently, Robinson leads the 7-team race at 10-0, followed by China Spring 8-2, Gatesville and Lorena 5-5, Connally 4-7, Hillsboro 2-8, La Vega 1-9. Gatesville (7-15 overall) rallied from an early deficit to down McGregor 13-12 here Tuesday night in non-district. The Hornets trailed early 7-0 and later 9-1 before its rally, which saw GHS shove across 12 runs in its final four at-bats (four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and fifth, two in the sixth). Peyton Bates (3-4, 3 RBI) collected three hits, while Billy Latham (2-3, 1 RBI) and Derrick Bayer (2-3, 2 RBI, 2B) had two hits apiece.
